Chiropractic and Pregnancy?
Contrary to popular belief, the birth process should not be something to fear or worry about. Actually, worrying about your birth has significant consequences! Modern Medicine has actually come to view the birthing process as a “condition” instead of a process!
Chiropractors work with the body’s ability to adapt and function the way it is designed to. Chiropractic care in pregnancy is vital to the normal physiological function of both the mother and the baby in pregnancy and birth.
For the Mom:
Prepares the pelvis for an easier pregnancy and birth by creating a state of balance in pelvic bony structures, muscles and ligaments.
Removes tension on the ligaments that support the uterus thus reducing torsion (intrauterine constraint) to the woman’s uterus.
Reduces interference to the mother’s vital nerve system which controls and co-ordinates all of her systems and functions.
Allows for a safer, easier birth for the mother decreasing the potential for intervention.
For the Little One:
Removes interference to the mother’s nerve system allowing for better baby development.
Allows the baby the room to develop without restrictions to its forming cranium, spine and other skeletal structures.
Offers the baby the room to move into the best possible position for birth.
With proper fetal positioning, there is a significant decrease in dystocia and the resulting birth trauma caused by intervention.
What is dystocia?
Dystocia is medical term referring to the resistance to proper function during birth.
There are three primary reasons/causes for dystocia in labor:
Physical/biomechanical causes
Emotional Causes
Medical/Technological Causes
The physical causes of dystocia are known, but all-too-often ignored or not addressed soon enough. Many times, a mother’s medical doctor during pregnancy (OB/GYN) is simply unaware of the benefits and role a doctor of chiropractic should play in ensuring the best pregnancy and birth possible. A good Midwife or OB/GYN will be able to notice warning signs of dystocia before the pregnancy moves too far along, and find a properly trained chiropractor to help reduce intrauterine constraint to allow room once again for the child to find its proper position in the womb. However, warning signs do not need to be present to be sure mom’s pelvis is in alignment! We love it when moms are proactive and get their spine and nervous system checked before a potential problem presents!
Lowering nervous system stress is vital in helping to ensure proper child development. Nervous system stress effects the body virtually the same way as emotional stress. It is well documented that stressors play a significant role in the success of a childbirth, as well as the health of the child once born. Chiropractic care lowers nervous system tension and had also been shown to lower cortisol levels, the “stress hormone.”
Dr. Steve is undergoing specialized training to further his knowledge both of the pregnancy process as well as care for newborns so that he can bring even a greater benefit to his patients. Everything he does is designed to help you and your future little one to have the best future possible. He has obtained special training in Webster’s Technique. The Webster’s technique is a specific chiropractic diversified analysis and adjustment that reduces interference to the nerve system and balances pelvic muscles and ligaments. This in turn reduces torsion in the uterus, a cause of intrauterine constraint and allows the baby to get into the best possible position for birth.
